On Wednesday 25th June our school chaplains enjoyed a day of celebration and dialogue with Bishop Brain at St Ambrose Barlow High School in Swinton.  We are very proud of our chaplains, the first group selected here at St Vincent’s, as they have done a fantastic job throughout this year and are now preparing to hand over to a group of Year 5 pupils who will carry on their great work around school. It was wonderful to be able to share our experiences with hundreds of chaplains from primary and secondary schools throughout the diocese of Salford. We enjoyed hearing about how other schools have incorporated chaplaincy into their schools and it was particularly inspirational to hear from chaplains in St Cuthbert’s and St Gabriel’s High Schools. We were fortunate to be able to pose questions to Bishop Brain about how he sees chaplaincy develop in the future and he had some testing questions to answer from our own pupils, for example ‘How can we make chaplaincy cool?’ We have got lots of new ideas from other schools and are excited about introducing them next year with our new chaplains. A huge thank you to our current chaplains who will be leaving us soon - maybe we will see you at future events as chaplains at your high schools!

On Friday 9th May it was the Year 5 Assembly. The Assembly was about the’ Send All My Friends to School’ campaign.  We explained to the school that currently there are 57 million children who do not get the chance to go to school for many reasons.  These include poverty and war.  About a third (24 million) of the children not going to school have a disability.  Many schools in developing countries just don’t have the facilities to help children who are not mobile, or blind or deaf.  By sending ‘’ buddies’’ (cardboard children) to Parliament and our MP we will be reminding them that World Leaders promised all primary aged children should be getting an education by the year 2015. Evelyn Glennie, the world famous percussionist featured in our Assembly. She is profoundly deaf but despite this was able to go to school and as a result has had an amazing international career in music.

Y1 - St Annes Trip - May 2014

Oh we do like to be beside the seaside!

On Tuesday 21st May our Year 1 children enjoyed at a great day out at Lytham St Anne’s.  Armed with buckets and spades they charged on to the beach to meet up with students from Blackpool and the Fylde College of Further Education who had organised a carousel of beach games for the children to take part in as part of their leadership skills training.  An added bonus this year was Asda sponsoring the event as part of a healthy lifestyle initiative and providing the participants with complimentary snacks and drinks throughout the morning, which was a welcome treat!  Great fun was had by all playing football, cricket, parachute games, treasure hunt and everyone’s favourite – sandcastle building.  The weather stayed fine and dry and, as if by magic, the sunshine appeared as the children sat down for their picnic lunch and ice cream cone.  The collaboration between the primary pupils and the further education students has taken place for three years now and we hope it will continue into the future.  St Vincent’s staff would like to say a huge thank you to all those involved in organising this great day out.

We hope you enjoy the slide show below:-

The children have been learning that the empty tomb shows Jesus triumphing over death and fulfilling the prophecies made in the Old Testament. Our Easter Gardens remind us that Jesus dying on the cross is not the end. By his death he opened up a new way of life and if we follow the right path, the teachings of Jesus, we will have eternal life. The children greatly enjoyed making them and we hope, will take care of them when they go home!
