Spring Term

Holy Week Mission - March 2015

Thanks to a wonderful group of ladies from the Marist Centre at Chorlton, the staff and children have experienced inspirational and emotional ways to follow the way of Christ's Passion during this holiest of weeks.

Thank you to Father Paul who allowed us to use the Church for these two special days.  Sr. Anne, Sr. Silvia, Anne Tipper, Mary T and Mary McK helped us to bring this term to a close in a most fitting way.

The next stage of the Challenge is on. Over the past 2 weeks the children have successfully nurtured their seed potatoes.  This week they have all carefully planted their crops, making sure they used just the right amount of soil and water and of course, making sure the tubas are the right way up!

Now for the exciting stage! They children will need to keep an eye on their potato sacks, earthing up as the shoots and leaves start to emerge and the weather making sure they get plenty of water.

We’ll be harvesting on 30 June – watch out for photos as the potatoes start to grow.

Caldershaw Green Visit - March 2015

On Tuesday 24 March, 30 members of our Eco Team were lucky enough to be invited to visit Caldershaw Green.  The children were selected to attend based on their dedication to the school's Eco Team.

Until recently the area, which is just behind school, off Caldershaw road, had been unkempt and misused.  However, through the dedication and determination of one of our Team's parents and help from local organisations and volunteers, the creation of a wonderful nature and wildlife habitat in the heart of the community has begun.

The children spent a morning with a local Ranger, Jude and an Environmental Biologist, Chantelle, exploring the newly laid pathways and natural habitats that have been created.

The activities the children took part in included a nature walk along the newly laid paths, mini beast hunting amongst the many habitats on the Green; identifying and cataloguing insects using simple techniques and a wonderful session with Chantelle with close up views of pond life using a microscope attached to a monitor.

Both children and staff had a fantastic time and have picked up lots of tips for creating some natural habitats back at school.  It's hoped that this visit is the first of many.

Y5 - Fairground Physics - March 2015

Last week (23rd March), for three full days, the children in Year 5 worked on a Physics and Design/Technology Project.

There were many objectives; the children learnt about how mechanical devices can change the magnitude and direction of force: they also developed their design skills   through designing and modelling fairground and playground rides.

On the first day they made a pop up toy using a cam which is a mechanical device which changes rotational movement into linear movement.

On the next two days the children designed a ride around one of the simple machines we had studied.  Following the planning stage they then went on to make the ride, some even adding electrical circuits in order to make their rides move.

We’ll be in Year One then, but it’ll be fun looking after our chicks’ chicks!

Y4 - China Day - Feb 2015

On Tuesday 10th February, Year 4 celebrated China Day. Throughout the day the children participated in a range of different activities before ending with a Chinese Banquet. During the term, the children have learnt all about Chinese New Year, the Shang Dynasty and many of the important geographical sites within China. The children were also very fortunate to be able to listen to a presentation given by Mr Underhill who had lived and worked in Shanghai.

It was fascinating to hear a very real and personal experience of the customs and cultures. We were amazed by the speed of change in cities and businesses in China but equally amazed by finding snake on the menu in Chinese restaurants! As always, our children displayed excellent behaviour and asked lots of interesting questions – well done year 4. We would like to say a huge thank to Mr Underhill for his time and also for the chopsticks and fortune cookies which were very gratefully received. Our chopsticks will be put to very good use in school when we learn all about Chinese New Year!
